KINGS XI Punjab have become the favourite whipping boys of the IPL this season - much like KKR last year - but they were not such a bad team earlier. At the half-way stage, Punjab have lost six of their seven matches. Their solitary win too came in a fortuitous manner, where CSK gifted them the match. Is it sheer bad luck that Kings XI are losing most of their matches in IPL III?…

IT WAS A prank, but at the same time so apt. It summed up the situation in the over hyped and high priced world of professional English football. It is well documented that the situation at Portsmouth Football has been dire for some time. Finally it found a new buyer in Nepalese born businessman Balram Chainrai. But wait, he only bought the club to hawk it to another owner.

2010 is a challenge to Indian sport to deliver. The staging of the Hero Honda World Cup and the Commonwealth Games is a massive test of organisation and determination. IPL 3 has huge expectations as T20 comes "home" to India, and the Indian national cricket team must live up to its worldbeating billing when it goes to South Africa at the end of the year.

ON Sunday night I watched a tense game of hockey between the bruising Argentinians and India. India scraped through by a whisker, winning a Bronze. The good thing was that the ultimate winner - New Zealand - was held to a draw by India in its opening game. Some cheer at last, I thought for a sport that is completely beleaguered in India. That India struggled to win a bronze in the…

TIGER Woods has broken his silence and has announced to the world that he will be taking an “indefinite break” from golf. Not only will it be a hiatus for Woods, his absence will also create a vacuum in the golfing world because no one can hit a golf ball better than this awesome player.

I say this as someone who has watched him up close in action: His ability to hit…

INDIA'S ascent to the top of the Test rankings has been a long time coming, and richly deserved as the team has surely and methodically honed its processes towards becoming among the dominant teams in Test cricket. A heady mix of young and experienced, firebrands and impenetrable calm, aggressive batting and innovative stylistic wrist-flicks, the Indian team has it all.

What…

MY WORST fears have come true. In a clear case of the 'Sovereign Republic of Suresh Kalmadi' (SRSK) versus the Union of India, SRSK is busy cocking a snook at the government of India. While every attempt has been made to paper over all the travails and shortcomings of the Commonwealth Games organising committee despite two major run ins; first with Commonwealth Games Federation…

SEASON IV of the IPL will see the end of ‘icon players’. It will also see the players being auctioned all over again. Somewhere pink balls are also going to be experimented with this time around in practice games. Two new teams will be joining in as well. So a lot of new things are kind of happening in the IPL.

The IPL has become such a successful model for everyone to…

I'M writing from Phuket, Thailand this week where every year I help out with the annual international triathlon, the biggest race in asia. It's a remarkable event, in and around the Laguna Phuket resort, which draws thousands of competitors from all over the world for not just the main race but also fun runs and kids races.

The first such Indian race is now…
