THE LAW COMMISSION OF INDIA got into a spot of bother couple of weeks ago. Not of its own making, but due to "misunderstanding" by the media. All that the Commission did was to submit a report following a directive from the Supreme Court mandating it to study the possibility of legalising betting in the country.

When the report, titled 'Legal Framework: Gambling and Sports Betting including in Cricket in…

IT IS FOOTBALL World Cup time, and thankfully, though India is not part of this sporting extravaganza, Indian football is making some noise, albeit even if it is for a few days only. But it took a heartfelt appeal from the captain to get the country to talk about the national team and its exploits. Sunil Chhetri was disheartened when he saw only three to four thousand fans gather for the opening match of the just-concluded Hero Intercontinental Cup. In a video message he…

HOW MUCH IS THE right price for owning cricket in India? Last week's e-auction for India cricket media rights throws in some pointers. With Star India outbatting its two opponents, Sony Pictures Networks India and Reliance Jio, with an offer of Rs 6,138 crores, the maths show a per match cost of around Rs 60 crore over the next five years. This has surpassed the Rs 54 crore for every IPL game that the same broadcaster is going to pay over the same period to the Board…

THE WRITING HAS BEEN on the wall for some time. But everyone has been adopting an ostrich-like mentality, not because they want to, but because they do not know what else to do. We are talking about Test cricket. Finally, former England cricketer, Kevin Pietersen, decided it was time to say it as it is. He claims that within the next decade, only five countries will play Test cricket – India, Australia, England, South Africa, and Pakistan.

Hardly surprising. But when a problem which…

He became only the fourth Indian to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Cricketer of the Year, and the ODI Cricketer of the Year award. ICC has also picked him as the captain for the Test and ODI teams of the year.

Kohli became only the second India batsman after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to…

IN A COUNTRY where sports is still in its infancy, with miles to run before reaching a decent industry size, most developments during a calendar year can be termed as ‘defining’, or ‘critical’ or ‘landmark’ moments. Each announcement, win, deal, debacle can have a greater impact on the future of the industry than it would have had in a developed market. While cricket will continue to make headlines as India retains its global hold over its business, the triumphs in other sports gain…

WHEN RAJASTHAN ROYALS, the underdogs, won the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 against all odds, one of the co-owners was overheard jokingly quipping to his business partner that it might be a good time to sell. Only time will now tell whether the owners of one of the most controversial teams in the IPL should have taken forward the thought seriously and acted on it, rather than have waited for value to grow in the hope of reaping much more.

If the IPL…
