LISBON: Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has become the most successful driver in terms of victories in Formula 1 history, after the Portuguese Grand Prix saw him claim his 92nd victory from team mate Valtteri Bottas and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.
Hamilton duly eased across the line a full 25.592s seconds – the largest winning margin of the year – up the road from Bottas to secure his 92nd Victory, a number Hamilton said after the race he simply couldn’t process.
Hamilton showed his gratitude to Mercedes in the press conference by stating: “‘The job we have done collectively as a team and it’s just reminiscent of the beginning when I joined the team, the decision I took to join the team and what we have done since. Did I think we would get to… I knew that we would win championships. Did I think we would win as many as we have? No. Did I think we would win this many races? Of course not. But it is a phenomenal time for us and the great thing is that it’s not just me that is living with the history, it’s the whole team and I think everyone acknowledges and realises how much they are part of it, so I feel incredibly grateful to my teammates.”
It’s only a matter of time before Hamilton seals his 7th world title. As for Mercedes, they have an insurmountable gap over Red Bull. They lead the Constructors’ Championship with 435 points, 209 points ahead of the Milton Keynes-based outfit who are in second place.
