Grand Slam

The 2023 edition of the Australian Open set a Grand Slam attendance record with more than 900,000 spectators visiting over three weeks, organisers said on Tuesday, despite the absence of some big-name players and schedule disruptions due to rain.

Australian Open 2023 broke the two-week attendance record with 839,192 fans through the gates, compared with the previous record of 812,174 set in 2020. A further 63,120 fans attended events during Qualifying Week bringing the three-week total to 902,312 fans.

MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) is all set to broadcast the year’s first Grand Slam, Australian Open 2021, LIVE on SONY SIX, SONY TEN 2 and SONY TEN 3 channels, starting February 8, in India.  SPSN will broadcast matches in Hindi on SONY TEN 3 channels while SONY SIX and SONY TEN 2 channels will be the destination of the tournament with English commentary.

DOMINIC THIEM MADE A comeback as he turned things around for a 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory across more than four hours to earn his first major championship at a nearly empty Arthur Ashe Stadium due to the coronavirus pandemic.  The 27-year-old from Austria is the first man to win the American Grand Slam tournament after trailing 2-0 in sets in the final since 1949.

LONDON: The four Grand Slam tournaments and the ITF have come together to pledge over $300,000 in financial support for wheelchair tennis. The fund will provide grants to help wheelchair athletes and national association event hosts impacted by the suspension of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour and postponement of major wheelchair tournaments due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WIMBLEDON, THE TENNIS calendar's only grass court Grand Slam, scheduled to begin in London on June 29, will in all likelihood NOT be held for the first time since 1945, when there was no event due to World War II. Wimbledon will be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to German Tennis Federation (DTB) vice-president Dirk Hordorff.
