adidas folds up digital sports unit

MUMBAI: Sportswear giant adidas is folding up its Digital Sports unit, the business division responsible for its fitness trackers and other wearable products.

Reports say the company’s American segment is closing its dedicated digital sports division and folding the group’s work into “all areas” of its business. This is likely to affect adidas’ wearable tech strategy, with some reports suggesting the brand is centering its efforts around Runtastic and its shopping app.

74 jobs will be either lost or reassigned to other parts of the business. The move will not affect adidas’ partnership with Fitbit to release an athlete-focused version of the Ionic smartwatch in 2018, a company spokesperson has been quoted by Engadget as saying.

adidas has been in the wearable space for over 15 years. The company bought Runtastic in 2015 and has since closed its own MiCoach service to focus on the acquired platform instead.
