NEW DELHI: The Union government has appointed PD Vaghela as the new chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The Gujarat cadre officer of the Indian Administrative Service, who is currently working as secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, will replace outgoing chairman RS Sharma who retires on the 30th September.
Sharma served as TRAI chief for five years on account of his having had two tenures in the position.
A notification of the Department of Personnel and Training states: “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of PD Vaghela, IAS (GJ: 1986), secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, as chairperson of TRAI for a period of three years or until he attains the age of 65, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.”
As per reports, Vaghela was one among the several officials who played a key role in the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017.
“... The industry is keenly looking for the leadership and support of the regulator and government for creating a more stable regulatory environment," said SP Kochhar, director general, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), on Vaghela's appointment.
