ECO-STRIDE: 100% Waste Managed Event & Zero to Landfill
The Tata Mumbai Marathon 2025 takes pride in being a socially inclusive and eco-conscious race.
The event has managed waste successfully through the adoption of the waste hierarchy principles - in particular the concepts of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost. In 2016, we embarked on a journey to ensure that we manage our waste at source in compliance with the local laws.
Since 2019, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has partnered with the event to work closely in the execution and last-mile disposal of all the waste generated on the route and venue. Procam has been working closely with professional organisations like Hasiru Dala Innovations, a social enterprise focused on fostering entrepreneurship and creating better livelihoods for waste pickers through inclusive businesses that have an environmental and social impact. They are being assisted by a local partner - Stree Mukti Sanghatana in executing the housekeeping and waste management services.
Over the years, Procam has taken up a number of initiatives to ensure alignment with the principles of sustainability, by ensuring limits on waste footprint, by limiting plastic use, promoting reuse of materials, and avoiding unnecessary printing of handbooks and application forms.
Initiatives include:
• Paper Consumption Reduction: Online registrations, Digital handbooks for participants and Email and digital communications
• Bib Distribution without packaging: Bibs will be distributed without any plastic packaging.
• Reusable backpacks: Reusable backpack bags will be given out at the Expo, and Event Kitting will be distributed in paper bags.
• Refreshment Bags: Post-race refreshments will be provided in reusable cloth bags.
• Bicycle-Friendly Access: Cycle parking for enthusiastic participants is arranged. Parking bays will be provided at Ballard Estate where they can park their bicycles.
• Public Transport encouraged: Use of public transport is encouraged. Both the Western and Central Railways will arrange local trains in the early morning hours to facilitate runners reaching the venue.
• Leftover Food Management: Leftover edible food will be distributed to the less fortunate with the assistance of Roti Bank.
• Leftover Water Management: Leftover water from bottles will be collected, stored, and used for watering trees in the neighbourhood.
• Water Refill Stations: Runners are encouraged to BYOB (Bring your own Bottle) to the event where they can refill them at refill stations available at the venue. This will save water and reduce plastic waste. After drinking from the bottle, participants should preferably drain it and drop it in the bins placed on the route.
• Waste Segregation: Waste Management Stations will be set up at different locations at the venue where segregation at source will be enforced with designated bins for Dry, Tetra, PET, and Wet waste.
• Composting: Organic waste will be composted at facilities managed by MCGM and Stree Mukti Sanghatana, while PET bottles and plastics will be recycled through MCGM authorised recyclers.
• Recycling of Paper and Cardboard: All paper and cardboard waste will be recycled.
• Excess Food Redistribution: Excess edible food will be donated to the underprivileged through Roti Bank.
• Repurposing Branding Material: Event branding and signage will be upcycled into roofing sheets and floor mats with the help of Stree Mukti Sanghatana
• Waste Management Reporting: A detailed report on waste impact will be published on our website post-event.
• Reduction in Printed Branding: Reduction in the need for printed banners and posters by using digital branding at the start and finish lines.
• Virtual Run Option: We offer a TMM virtual run, allowing participants to join the race from other locations or from their own cities reducing travel impact which further reduces carbon emissions.
Used Shoe Collection Drive: Runners have an option of dropping off their used shoes at the Expo which will be collected and distributed among the underprivileged.
