CHENNAI: Raymond group chairman Gautam Singhania has been nominated for the FIA titular post in the World Motor Sports Council by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI).
The post in the Geneva headquartered international body was previously held by fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya, who who is currently the subject of an extradition effort by government agencies to try to force his return from the UK to face charges of financial crimes.
The Sports Ministry asked the FMSCI to withdraw the nomination of the beleaguered former liquor baron, says a Deccan Chronicle report.
While Singhania has competed in the Ferrari Challenge, he has not served the sport in an official capacity so far.
The decision of the FMSCI however does not appear to have been a unanimous one, as an official has been quoted as saying that his name was recommended by a 'sponsor' and was based on personal preferences and not merit.
