
MUMBAI: Boxing Federation of India promoted Indian Tigers is all set to take their first shot at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) backed World Series Boxing Season 8, which simultaneously kicked off last Friday in Cuba, France and Italy.
Indian starts from February 9.
When pugilists representing Indian Tigers put on their boxing gloves this Friday, it will mark the return of an Indian franchise to the league from Asia after a seven-year gap. For the record, Indian Tigers replaces Mumbai Fighters, the team that had withdrawn from the WSB in 2012 due to lack of support from the national body at the time,
Flyweight boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht will lead the Indian charge against Kazakhstan's Astana Arlans while much is expected from Ankus Dahiya in the light weight class and Duryodhan Singh Negi in the Welter weight category, PTI reports.
The five-member squad includes Kavinder Singh Bisht (fly), Ankush Dhaiya (light), Duryodhan Singh Negi (welter), Brijesh Yadav (light-heavy) and Praveen Kumar (super heavy).
Season VIII sees 12 teams compete in three regional groups; America, Europe and Asia, with home and away matches, consisting of five bouts each, between the group rivals.
The top two teams from each group and the two strongest third-placed teams will qualify for the play-offs, which assume the format of four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the grand final.
Season VIII features the stars of the 2017 AIBA World Championships and Rio 2016 Olympic Games. WSB boxers accounted for 23 Olympic medals at the Games, including 6 Golds.
