MUMBAI: The International Cricket Council has directly contradicted media reports in India that the ICC's affilate members had come to an understanding that this year's T20 World Cup in Australia would be pushed back to 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Multiple media reports had "confirmed" Wednesday that the postponement of the World Cup, which might open up a window for the lucrative Indian Premier League in October, was expected to be formalised when the ICC’s all-powerful board holds a tele-conference on Thursday.
In its official response, the ICC stated that "reports of a postponement of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 are inaccurate and planning for the event continues whilst a number of contingency plans are being explored in light of the rapidly changing public health situation caused by the COVID-19 virus".
ICC statement in full:
"The ICC board met yesterday (Tuesday) to discuss the process for electing the next chair of the ICC.
"No final decision was taken regarding the election process and the subject will be discussed further at the next ICC board meeting on Thursday. The existing chair (Shashank Manohar) confirmed he was not seeking any extension to his term but would support the board to ensure a smooth transition.
"Additionally, reports of a postponement of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 are inaccurate and planning for the event continues whilst a number of contingency plans are being explored in light of the rapidly changing public health situation caused by the COVID-19 virus."
