Steve Phelps

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.: NASCAR has elevated company executive Steve Phelps, who joined the US stock-car racing sanctioning and operating company in 2005, to president, effective October 1.

Phelps joins only four other individuals who have held the title of NASCAR president since the sport’s inception in 1948 - Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr., Mike Helton and Brent Dewar.

Dewar has elected to step down and will remain with the company through the end of the 2018 racing season, transitioning to a senior consulting and advisory role in 2019.
