FOOTBALL SUPERSTAR LIONEL MESSI has won a nine-year legal battle to register his name as a trademark, with the European Union's top court ruling in his favour.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg dismissed an appeal moved by a Spanish cycling company Massi and the EU’s Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) over trademark rights related to his logo.

The Barcelona footballer first applied to trademark his surname as a sportswear brand in 2011.

CHINA'S SUPREME COURT has ruled in favour of basketball legend Michael Jordan in a long-running trademark dispute, ending an eight-year legal battle with Chinese sportswear firm Qiaodan Sports.  The landmark ruling, made late last month, prohibits the Fujian-based company from using the Chinese translation of Jordan's name, Qiao Dan, AFP reports.

LUXEMBOURG: The General Court of the European Union ruled on Wednesday that German sportswear giant adidas’ iconic three-stripe branding was invalid as a trademark as it was an "ordinary figurative mark", lacking a distinctive character. It thus upheld a decision of the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in 2016 to annul a previous decision to accept the trademark.

MUMBAI: The world’s richest footballer Lionel Messi has won a European court case that will permit him to trademark his own name for sporting goods.   The Argentinian had applied for the rights to trademark his name at the European Union Office for Intellectual Property (EUIPO) in 2011, BBC reports.
