MUMBAI: The much-awaited National Sports Talent Search Portal will be launched in New Delhi by the vice president of India Venkaiah Naidu Monday.
The portal will allow young players, talented in a particular sport to upload the sporting achievements of any child over eight years. The achievements will be evaluated by the union sports ministry and the Sports Authority of India officials. Shortlisted players will then be called for trials at the nearest SAI Centre for final selection. Around 1000 children will be selected and they will receive scholarships of Rs500,000 per year for eight years.
The portal will provide a three step simple process for registration, profile creation and upload of achievements and will be available in English and other regional languages. The portal will also be available as an app.
Prime minister Narendra Modi touched upon the launch of the portal during his monthly radio address to the nation. Stressing on the fact that the Sports Ministry would impart training to selected emerging players, Modi exhorted the younger generation to take to sports in a big way.
"Sports should become a part of our lives. If we are a young nation, our youth should get manifested in the field sports as well. Sports means, physical fitness, mental alertness and personality enhancement. What else does one need? Sports, in a way, is a recipe that brings people together. The young generation of our country should come forward in the world of sports – and in today’s computer era I would like to alert you to the fact that the playing field is far more important than the play station. Play FIFA on the computer, but sometimes show your skills with the football out in the field. You must be playing cricket on the computer but the pleasure of actually playing cricket in an open field under the sky is something else," he said.
