MUMBAI: The All India Football Federation held a special general body meeting (SGM), which among other matters cleared the way for the national football body to amend its constitution.

According to a statement put out by the AIFF, the SGM unanimously ratified and approved the AIFF constitution as per the Societies Registration Act, Maharashtra. The process was completed in the presence of Purushottam Kattel, international relations officer, Asian Football Confederation who was present as an observer.

Representatives from AIFF's commercial partners Football Sports Development Ltd were also present.

The AIFF constitution was "amended to keep it in line with the FIFA and the AFC Constitution and to clarify and modify certain definitions to avoid anomalies and ambiguities", the football body declared.

One matter that was on public record post the SGM was this. "As per the requisites of the newly amended constitution", former India international Abhishek Yadav was appointed as one of the members of the AIFF executive committee while Anjali Shah was nominated as the second woman member of the AIFF executive committee.

There was no word however on reports that the SGM would be amending its constitution so as to vest the post of "honorary president" with a wide range of powers and responsibilities in the apex body.

As per the Sports Code one can remain president of a national federation for a maximum period of 12 years. AIFF president Praful Patel will complete 12 years in office in December 2019, but will remain eligible to be the honorary president.

After amendments, the honorary president will also be a part of the executive committee in a "consultative" manner and a member of the emergency committee.

To add to it, clear provision has been made in the proposed constitution to make way for the honorary president to become the AIFF representative in FIFA and the AFC.

Looking to ward of any criticisms that might arise for the reported move, Patel was quoted as urging all stakeholders for their support. "AIFF is a democratic organisation. There are a lot of developments taking place and we are all looking forward to the successful hosting of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, India 2017. We need your continuous participation and support,” Patel said.
