MUMBAI: The Ghana Sports Ministry will fly 300 fans to India to support the national U-17 team, the Black Starlets of Ghana, ahead of the FIFA U17 World Cup which begins this Friday.
The airlifting of the supporters to India will be funded with financial support from the private sector.
In an interview to Finder Sports, Ghana's Minister of Youth and Sports Isaac Asiamah said that his ministry is facilitating fans travelling to India to support the Black Starlets and that number has been pegged at 300.
“The first consideration of sending supporters is for them to come under one umbrella and they have shown that during the WAFU tournament in Cape Coast (a city in southern Ghana). They have written a letter to me that they have come together and they are called Coalition of Ghana Supporters Union and they demonstrated that in Cape Coast and I was very impressed," he said.
Asiamah also mentioned that the flying of supporters is being done through private funds. According to the website, the Ghana government had issued a White Paper in 2014 which states that the Sports Ministry can fly supporters to a tournament only if they come under one umbrella.
