NEW DELHI: Olympian Akhil Kumar has terminated his contract with his management firm IOS Boxing Promoters, citing “unprofessional approach”.

The one time poster boy of Indian boxing, had entered into the contract with IOS in October 2016 and was promised six fights in a calender year. However, in the last one year, the promoters have only managed to arrange one fight.

Akhil told The Tribune that since he had signed an exclusivity contract, he rejected some very good offers that came his way. Akhil had shot an email to his promoters, highlighting non-fulfilment of the contract terms. When he did not get a response, he sent them a legal notice.

“I was supposed to fight as many as six bouts in 12 months and train abroad. But after one pro fight nothing has happened. It has hurt my progress on the pro circuit. So I have terminated my contract,’’ he told Hindustan Times.

His counsel Naveen Raheja told the daily: “IOS had failed to fulfil the terms and conditions of the contract. They had assured Akhil that they would make efforts to give a further boost to his profile, apart from promising him a fixed amount for every fight. It has been one year and they have managed to arrange only one fight for him and that too not up to the mark.”

“As per the contract, they were supposed to bear his training expenses too. That too has not been taken care of and therefore we had to take this legal course of action against them,” added Raheja.

Tomar, meanwhile, told HT, "We will work out a solution."
