NEW DELHI: The Union government has decided to launch dedicated all-girls leagues as part of its Khelo India intitiative.
Named as the ‘Khelo India Girls League’ (KIGL), the first to get off the blocks will be the ‘Khelo India Girls Football League’. It will be held under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) while the technical and organisational support will be extended by the All India Football Federation.
The initiative comes as an effort to create a buzz around the U-17 women’s football World Cup, which India hosts next year. All the proposed leagues will be organised in association with national sports federations (NSFs) and respective state governments.
While the dates and venues for the football league are yet to be announced, it is expected to run close to the upcoming edition of the Khelo India Youth Games, which is scheduled from 10-22 January 2020 in Guwahati.
