LONDON: In a welcome move that upholds the long espoused principle that politics should be kept out of international sport, the ATP, WTA and International Tennis Federation (ITF) late Friday confirmed that this year's Wimbledon Grand Slam has been stripped of ranking points.

Reason: The decision by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), UK's governing body for tennis, following on from Russia's invasion of Ukraine, to ban Russian and Belarusian players from participating in the sport's only grass court Grand Slam.

Fed Cup shifts Asia/Oceania tie from China to Kazakhstan

LONDON: The ITF has announced that the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group I event, due to take place next month at the Dongguan Tennis Centre in Dongguan, China, P.R., will now be played in the National Tennis Centre in Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana), Kazakhstan. The Asia/Oceania Group I contest has India, China, Indonesia, Korea, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan competing.

LONDON: David Haggerty has been re-elected ITF president, during the first round of voting at the ITF Annual General Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal on Friday. Haggerty, of the USA, will serve a fresh four-year term from 2019-23. The total number of votes registered was 437, with 428 valid votes cast. There were no spoiled ballots and 9 abstentions meaning 215 votes were required to reach a majority.
