MUMBAI: Tennis was the clear winner at the Laureus Sports Awards 2019 in Monaco as the World No.1 men’s and women’s singles players, Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year and the World Breakthrough of the Year awards respectively on Monday.

Djokovic roared back from being World No.22 prior to the start of Wimbledon in June 2018, to being World No.1 at present, following his wins at the Championships in London, US Open and the Australian Open 2019 to break a 2-year Grand Slam drought.

Laureus Sport honours Indian NGO Yuwa
MUMBAI: The much-coveted ‘Laureus Sport for Good’ honour, which is bestowed to an organisation bringing positive social change through sport, has been won by an Indian NGO named Yuwa this year. Based out of Jharkhand, Yuwa was founded by the American duo of Franz and Rose Gastler in 2009 with the aim of making young girls and women self-sufficient through the game of football in the rural parts of the state.

Laureus Awards 2019 to be held in Monaco
NEW DELHI: The 19th edition of the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards will be held in Monaco on 18 February next year. Considered the 'Oscars of Sports', the awards celebrate global sporting achievements across the calendar year. The nominations to honour the sporting achievements of 2018 will start later this month.
