NEW DELHI: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday presented the last big budget before her government returns to the polls in 2024’s general elections, and introduced a slew of measures meant to cater to as wide a spectrum of the voting populace as possible.

Specific to sports, in a year when Indian athletes will compete at the Asian Games and prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Union Sports Ministry has received its highest-ever budget allocation of Rs 3,397.32 crore.

NEW DELHI: The total expenditure incurred by the Union Sports Ministry under different schemes for promotion of sports, including for women athletes in 2019 (till October) was Rs 8.95 billion, out of which Rs 3.2 billion was incurred for Khelo India, Rs 3.285 billion for Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Rs 2.45 billion for National Sports Federations.

NEW DELHI: The Union Sports Ministry has decided to allow national and state sports federations, leagues and clubs to organise sports events in all sporting facilities owned by the government, free of cost in order to further the Fit India Movement and to make playfields and sporting infrastructure accessible, without fee, to all sports persons across the country from 1st November.

NEW DELHI: A week after the Equestrian Federation of India sent a letter to the Sports Ministry, asking to be exempt from certain provisions of the National Sports Code, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday reiterated in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) that all national sports federations (NSFs) will have to adhere to the code.
