Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the best and most consistent team in the 2024 edition of the TATA Indian Premier League, were crowned champions Sunday with a dominating all-round performance that included fiery spells by Mitchell Starc and Andre Russell and a half-century by Venkatesh Iyer against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
It was on May 26, in 2012, that KKR beat Chennai Super Kings in Chennai to lift their first IPL title, and on Sunday, 12 years later, they did it again.
In securing their third IPL title and their first in ten years, the Knight Riders only gave up three losses in IPL 2024, a record in itself. No other team in IPL history conceded only three games while becoming the champion.
The KKR bowlers did extremely well to restrict the dangerous SRH batting line-up to 113 – which was chased down in only 10.3 overs with eight wickets in hand. The best bowler for KKR was Andre Russell (3/19). Harshit Rana (2/24) and Starc (2/14) made valuable contributions with the ball as well. Varun Chakravarthy, Vaibhav Arora, and Sunil Narine each claimed a wicket.
Team prize money
KKR were rewarded a cash prize of Rs 20 crore ($2.4 million) for winning the IPL 2024 title while runners-up SRH took home Rs 12.5 crore.
Rajasthan Royals will get Rs 7 crore for finishing third while Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be rewarded Rs 6.5 crore as they finished fourth.
