240+ entries for LVL Zero 1st cohort; shows surge in gaming startups

LVL ZERO, a gaming-focused incubator backed by MIXI Global Investments, Nazara Technologies and Chimera VC, has received more than 240 applications for its inaugural cohort, highlighting strong momentum in India’s early-stage gaming startup ecosystem.

The applications, which opened on January 26, span a wide range of game studios and gaming infrastructure startups across mobile, PC and console platforms, offering a snapshot of a rapidly evolving industry driven by micro-studios, new technologies and global ambitions, a media release said.

LVL Zero’s inaugural cohort will select 10 startups, each receiving an equity-free grant of $10,000 along with a 100-day structured program focused on product development, validation and market readiness. The incubator aims to support over 100 gaming and interactive startups over the next five years, positioning India as a key global hub for game development and interactive entertainment.

A key trend emerging from the applicant pool is the rapid formation of small, early-stage studios. Nearly 46.9% of applicants were founded in 2025, while 66.8% have been established since 2024, indicating a sharp influx of new entrants into the sector.

Most teams are lean, with a median size of three to four members, reflecting a new generation of founders leveraging modern development tools and AI to build scalable products with limited resources.

From a development standpoint, around 46.9% of applicants are at the prototype stage, 19.5% in alpha, 11.2% in beta, and 11.6% already have live products, pointing to a strong early-stage pipeline.

The data also indicates a growing ambition among Indian developers to build for premium platforms. About 58.5% of applicants are developing for PC, while 36.1% are targeting consoles, signaling a shift beyond the traditionally dominant mobile segment. However, mobile-first studios continue to demonstrate faster execution, with roughly 25% of such teams already having live products, compared to lower live rates for PC and console-focused developers, the release said.

Indian gaming startups are increasingly embedding advanced capabilities into their products from the outset. Over 30% of applicants referenced live-operations systems, retention metrics or user acquisition strategies, indicating a move toward data-driven game design.

Additionally, approximately 22.8% of applicants reported using AI or machine learning in their development pipelines, with nearly half of infrastructure-focused startups leveraging AI for analytics, personalisation and growth automation.

Around 36% of applications incorporate Indian mythology, folklore or culturally rooted narratives, particularly in PC and console projects. This reflects a growing ambition among developers to create globally relevant, narrative-driven games rooted in Indian identity.

The applicant base also highlights the geographic spread of India’s gaming ecosystem, with Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Delhi NCR emerging as leading hubs, collectively accounting for nearly half of the applications, the release added.
