MUMBAI: The countdown to India’s iconic sporting event – the IAAF Gold Label Tata Mumbai Marathon 2019 is on. Over 46,000, including some of the world’s best, are gearing up for Sunday, 20th January.
REGISTRATIONS: For the 2019 edition, Tata Mumbai Marathon had launched the initiative ‘Mumkin Hai – Run for the Full’ with Mumbai Striders. The aim was to galvanize, encourage and assist amateur half marathoners to push their limits towards becoming a full marathoner. The success of this initiative is reflective in the registrations this year and for the first time, there are 8,414 participants for the Full Marathon, a 22% increase from 2018.
PRESENCE OF CHAMPIONS: 2019 edition of the event will witness Ethiopia’s Abera Kuma lead the men’s field, while the women’s field will be headlined by the defending women’s champion AmaneGobena. Along with the Six-Time World Boxing Champion, Mary Kom, as the event ambassador, the event will be graced bySouth African Comrades Marathon champion, Bruce Fordyce. Popularly known as the ‘Comrades King’, Bruce has been the winner of South Africa’s grueling ultra-marathon for an unprecedented eight consecutive years, and nine times overall.

The increasing participation from not just Mumbaikars in the Tata Mumbai Marathon, but from runners across the country and globe is testament to the success of this IAAF Gold event in bringing together over 46,000 runners on one common platform every year in this city.”
He further added: “Tata Mumbai Marathon inspires everybody to #BeBetter and is a great opportunity to engage with the community, connect with youngsters and create awareness about the importance of good health.”

MUNICIPAL CORPORATION OF GREATER MUMBAI PARTNERS TMM:
For the first time ever, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has partnered with the event to work closely in the execution and last mile disposal of all the waste generated on-course, the holding area and the event expo.
The entire route will be cleared off all the waste generated within five hours of all Race category course closure (6:00 pm on Sunday, 20th Jan)
The waste generated in the above areas will be segregated at each of location as Dry and Wet Waste. The waste generated includes – organic waste, Tetra packs, PET Bottles, packaging material & cool sponges. This dry / wet, first level segregated waste will be taken to the waste segregation stations at the MCGM Ward Office – where total segregation and last mile recycling would be actioned.
In addition to this, the other Pro-active measures taken by Procam International to ensure reduction in waste generated and management include:
Registration & Communication
§ Online Entry Forms & E-Handbooks:Reduction in paper consumption for printing forms and handbooks for applicants.
Plastic usage reduction:
§ Cloth Sling Bags given to all participants (46,500 participants)
§ Refreshments to be handed out in Cloth bags, and the refreshments would be served in recyclable cardboard boxes. (46,500 Participants)
§ Reduction in 60,000 + plastic bottles across the event. There will be designated water refilling stations in the holding area and on the course, where runners can refill their own bottles or use recyclable paper glasses.
Flex Upcycling & Greener Signage
§ Cloth signages introduced at key locations to reduce flex branding.
§ Event flex generated will be carefully slit from the frames, upcycled and reused as floor mats to sort / cover waste or as roofing sheets / bags for the marginalised. This will be undertaken by Stree Mukti Sanghatana an NGO that works with women waste-pickers.
Greener mode of Transport:
§ Train Services: Special trains arranged in the early morning hours on race day to Churchgate and CSMT.
§ Bus Services: A total of 55 buses will run upto 5:10 am from outside Mahalaxmi (western line) and Parel (central line) railway stations between 3:30 am and 4:45 am for all registered Half Marathon Participants.
§ Car Pooling: Awareness raised at Expo requesting participants to carpool on Race Day. Car parking stickers only for runners who commit to Car Pool.
Bio Waste Management:
§ All the Bio Waste generated will be transferred to Kalamboli Sewage Treatment Plant, Panvel Municipal Corporation

TMM GET ACTIVE EXPO: A one-stop destination for runners, the Expo will be organized at MMRDA Ground, G Block, next to the US Consulate, Near Parini Building, Opp MCA, Bandra East, Mumbai from 16th to 19th January.
The Expo will be on between 10.30 a.m. and 7.00 p.m. on 16th to 18th January 2019, and on 19th January 2019 between 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. The Expo is also the venue for all confirmed participants from Mumbai and Outstation registered runners to come and collect their running bibs, study in detail race day instructions, familiarize themselves with all the time lines, approach plans, layout plans, security arrangements, traffic restrictions, road closures and other provisions that will come into force on Race Day.
