MUMBAI: Google India Wednesday announced the results for its Year in Search 2021, recapping the top search trends of 2021 in India. And for the second year running, it was the Indian Premier League (IPL) that “topped the charts”.
The listing reveals what Indians searched for the most throughout the year across news, sports, entertainment and other categories.
As per the results for 2021, sports in general and cricket in particular (no surprises there) dominated, with the IPL, the ICC T20 World Cup, Euro Cup football and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics filling 4 (in that order) of the top 5 spots in the overall list of search queries. The only “intrusion” into the sports monopoly was CoWIN (the Indian government web portal for COVID-19 vaccination registration), which stood second.
Also in sports, interest around football was also popular thanks to the Euro Cup and Copa America tournaments that took place last summer. Surprisingly (at least for us), there was more interest for the Euro Cup (in which India has zero involvement) than the Tokyo Olympics.
Speaking of Olympics, Tokyo 2020 Gold medallist Neeraj Chopra topped the list of trending personalities in the country, with Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan and model-turned actor Shehnaaz Gill placed second and third.
Tesla chief and crypto enthusiast Elon Musk ranked fifth among the most trending personalities
