MUMBAI: The “original eight” Indian Premier League franchises submitted their player-retention list on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming IPL mega auction in January.
The franchises have been allowed to retain a maximum of four, while the two new franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – can acquire three from the rest of the player pool before the January auction.
The biggest names that have been released by their respective teams and have gone into the auction pool, but are expected to be split between the two new franchises are that of Australian star and former SRH captain David Warner and now former Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul.
Each of the eight franchises used the Player Retention option with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) opting to retain 4 players each. Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have retained 3 players each while Punjab Kings (PK) have retained 2. PK thus have the highest salary purse available with Rs 72 cr while Delhi Capitals have least at Rs 47.50cr to be used at the mega auction.
Of the 27 retained players, 8 are overseas and 4 are uncapped Indians.

The two new franchises have time from December 1 to December 25 to sign two Indian and one overseas player.
