MUMBAI: The International Cricket Council has responded to the Board of Control for Cricket in India demand that the global governing body NOT recognize the controversial Kashmir Premier League.
BCCI had asked the ICC if an international league can be played in a disputed territory like Kashmir
An ICC spokesperson, while talking to Pakistan’s Geo TV, noted that the Kashmir Premier League does not come under the jurisdiction of the governing body as it is not an international tournament.
According to the ICC rules, each full member nation is well within its rights to stage a domestic competition on its own and the ICC can only intervene if the tournament is to be held in an associate country.
ESPN Cricinfo quoted the ICC as having said in a statement: “The tournament is not under ICC’s jurisdiction as it is not an international cricket tournament.”
A number of retired international cricketers like Herschelle Gibbs, Tillekerate Dilshan have reportedly signed on to take part in the competition, which is scheduled to get underway on August 5th.
Gibbs, a few days ago, had taken to Twitter alleging that the BCCI was threatening him over his participation in the KPL and is not allowing him to enter India.
The PCB then released an official statement accusing its Indian counterparts of threatening member boards.
In its riposte, the BCCI had declared on Saturday that the Indian board was “well within its rights” to do anything in the best interest of its cricketing ecosystem.
