MUMBAI: Keeping the official intimation to the last day (June 28 deadline set by the International Cricket Council), for reasons best known to the powers that be within the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the BCCI on Monday confirmed its intention to “host” the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
“We will inform ICC today (Monday) that we are shifting the T20 World Cup to UAE. The dates of the tournament, the ICC needs to decide,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah told ANI.
Though there is still no “official word” on the matter, multiple media reports have “confirmed” thet that T20 World Cup is set to start from October 17, with the final for the 16-team tournament scheduled for November 14.
On a related note, again though the official announcement is till awaited, the Indian Premier League is set to get underway in the UAE on September 19, with the final to be played on October 15.
Shah’s confirmation also means that the general public will be spared any further “kite flying” media reportage around various improbable scenarios of the T20 World Cup being held in India in multiple cities despite the logistical nightmare that would have entailed (mercifully no speculative reports pointed to the nine original host cities staying as is).
