NEW DELHI: The Boxing Federation of India, which had postponed elections scheduled for December 18 at BFI’s Annual General Meeting citing the COVID-19 pandemic, has called an emergency Special General Meeting on December 24. The BFI’s top officials are already on extension after the original election dates expired on September 25. The term was then extended for three more months.
The BFI had called for elections on December 18 as per the Union Sports Ministry’s directive to conduct elections before December 31 for recognition to continue, New Indian Express reports. The elections were called off late on December 7, just hours after the nomination process for office bearers had been completed.
BFI president Ajay Singh was challenged by Ashish Shelar for the post of president. Shelar was supported by BFI secretary general Jay Singh.
Some BFI officials told the daily that the elections could now be delayed by two to three months at least as the BFI is not too keen on conducting the process online, as some other federations in a similar situation have done / are doing.
