NEW DELHI: The Hockey India executive board held an emergent executive board meeting Friday naming Manipur’s Gyanendro Ningombam as HI’s officiating president.
This follows the resignation of Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad from the position received by Hockey India on 7 July “due to his personal and family commitments”, HI declared.
The truth of the matter however is that Ahmad’s resignation was forced following a demand placed by the Union Sports Ministry that he step down on the grounds that his election in 2018 violated the 2011 National Sports Development Code.
While accepting Ahmad’s resignation, HI’s EB nominated and approved senior vice president Ningombam as the new officiating president.
Ningombam has for several years been associated with Manipur Hockey and has been instrumental in supporting talented players and the development of the sport at the grassroots level. He also served as the editor of Meeyam, an evening daily newspaper in Manipur. Ningombam has earlier served Manipur Hockey as its chief executive officer from 2009 to 2014 pursuant to which he was elected as vice president of Manipur Hockey from 2014 – 2018.
