DUBAI: The executive board of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), which met via video conference Monday, has left a final decision on the fate of the Asia Cup 2020, including possible venue options, for a later undetermined date.
It is understood that the ACC will wait for the ICC’s decision on the T20 World Cup in Australia (October-November) before taking a final call.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has the hosting rights for the tournament but with the country being a no-go for cricket’s financial centre India, most reports had suggested that the UAE would be the hosting country if the tournament did take place.
In a new development, Sri Lanka Cricket has put its hand up as a possible host. “We had a discussion with PCB and they have already agreed to our hosting this edition due to the present world situation,” SLC president Shammi Silva was quoted as saying by local media outlet Ceylon Today. “We had an online ACC meeting and they basically gave us the green light to host the tournament,” he added.
Attending the ACC meeting for the first time were BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah.
Meanwhile the executive board was also apprised of the status and progress of the ACC’s involvement with the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China.
