3 PVL teams initiate legal action against VFI

NEW DELHI: Acting against what they claim is the unilateral termination of the Pro Volleyball League, three of the six franchises in the PVL have sent a legal notice to the Volleyball Federation of India.

They have alleged that the termination of the league came as a shock, especially as after a meeting between FIVB, VFI commercial rights holder Baseline, and the franchises, the start of the second season on the league had been finalized.

This was after a Deloitte Report submitted at the same meeting cleared Baseline of any financial irregularity as was alleged by VFI secretary general Ramavtar Singh Jakhar.

They also alleged that though the VFI subsequently communicated to them the intention of starting a new volleyball league, they provided absolutely no clarity regarding the composition, dynamics, format or schedule of the new league. This, when the VFI had announced that they would conduct the league from 25th February.

The teams who have sent a legal notice to VFI include last year’s champions, the Chennai Spartans, the Calicut Heroes, Kochi Blue Spikers.

This latest development comes as a fresh setback to the VFI, who are already facing serious damages in their arbitration proceedings with Baseline in the Chennai High Court, apart from the rupees Rs 22.5 million which also has to be returned to Baseline by VFI as per the termination clause of the agreement.

It also follows a written intimation last week from the Union Sports Ministry, directing them to conduct the VFI elections in April and to have their electoral college in order a month before that.
