WC final ties India-Pak match for concurrent viewership

MUMBAI: The nail-biting final of the 12th ICC World Cup that saw England beat New Zealand in a match that ended with scores tied at both the end of the regular game as well as following the historic super over, had another tied score to boast of for Star India’s OTT platform Hotstar – concurrent viewership.

‘Concurrent views’ are the number of viewers who watched the stream at each second and hence fluctuates as viewers joined and left the stream.

Moneycontrol reports that the match started with as little as 3 million concurrent viewers and retained numbers in the 3-4 million range for as long as the 42nd over of the match.

The concurrent views touched 15.6 million in the Super Over, a first for a World Cup final, as New Zealand tied with England’s score. Super Over is the tie-breaking method used in Twenty20 cricket.

The numbers match the concurrent viewers recorded during the India vs Pakistan match, which Hotstar had then announced as the highest-ever for a One Day International (ODI).

However, it is the India vs New Zealand semi-finals (which the valiant Kiwi team deservedly won) that now holds the ODI record of 25 million concurrent viewers, Moneycontrol further reports.
