MUMBAI: The agreement has been signed, sealed and delivered. SportzPower can confirm that Star India has retained its long-standing hold on media rights for the English Premier League in this market for the next three seasons. All that remains is for the official announcement to be made.
And as predicted by SportzPower in its analysis published in August 2018, there has been a price contraction (this website maintains it is a price correction) for a second rights cycle running.
So what is the price that has been negotiated for the Premier League rights for seasons 2019-2020, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022? Informed industry sources have confirmed to SportzPower that Star’s payout over the next three seasons will total $78 million.
Considering that Star India’s current Premier League deal was itself a massive come down from the previous cycle (from $145 million to $90 million), this contraction could be termed as far less drastic and closer to what SportzPower had calculated as the “true value” these rights SHOULD fetch in this market – in the $72-$75 million range.
