Goal to t’cast UEFA CL in SE Asia on Twitter

LONDON: The UK-based Perform Group’s flagship digital media property in football, Goal.com has become the first ever in the South-East Asia region to live stream UEFA Champions League matches through its official Twitter handle and on its website, Inside World Football reports. The value of the rights acquisition hasn’t yet been disclosed.

For a start, the four Round of 16 games, i.e. Tottenham Hotspur vs Borussia Dortmund (which was completed in the wee hours of Thursday); Liverpool vs Bayern Munich (20 February); Paris Saint-Germain v Manchester United (7 March) and Manchester City v Schalke 04 (13 March) will be offered free-to-cost to fans for viewing in Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia and Laos.

Viewers in Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore will get to watch the highlights of all the Round of 16 matches on Twitter.

Twitter head of sports partnerships South-East Asia Maurizio Barbieri told the publication: “Looking at the levels of conversation on Twitter, football fans in our region are some of the most engaged and passionate on the planet, so it’s fitting that the matches are being streamed in this way.”

Goal.com head of content James Dickens added: “This will allow as many fans as possible in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and the Philippines to enjoy these high-stakes games between some of the best supported teams in the region.”
