Govt to invest Rs3.44bn for upgrading sports sciences & research

MUMBAI: The Union government has offered details on the upcoming National Centre of Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR), which aims to support high level research, education and innovation with respect to high performance of elite athletes.

In a written reply to the Lower House of Parliament (Lok Sabha) on Wednesday, Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore stated that the setting up of the NCSSR will cost the government Rs 1.07 billion.

As part of the NCSSR, sports sciences and medicine departments in 12 handpicked medical colleges and universities of high repute will be provided government subsidy which amounts to Rs 2.37 billion. Consequently, students will be offered M.Sc, MD or DSM degrees respectively who will play an integral role in rehabilitating injured sportpersons as part of their learning, which also reduces dependency on foreign experts.

In 2017-18, the government has released Rs 55 million for setting up the NCSSR and has already provided Rs 30 million each this year to the likes of Annamalai University (Tamil Nadu), Central University of Rajasthan and the University of Calcutta. During these two years, the Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar has been granted Rs 46.4 million in total.

The other educational institutes being supported are King George Medical University (Lucknow), Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital (New Delhi), Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences (Haryana), Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (Imphal).
