Lanka shelves ‘IPL-style’ T20 tourney plan

COLOMBO: Any plans Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Thursday officially launched the ‘SLC T20 League’ which will be held from August 21 to September 2 this year. The tournament will be contested amongst 4 teams hailing from the top cities of Colombo, Dambulla, Galle and Kandy respectively.

All the teams will play each other twice in the first round in a round-robin format. The top two teams at the end of the round will play in the final at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in the Sri Lankan capital city.

It is expected that Sri Lanka’s biggest cricketing stars such as ODI and T20 captain Angelo Mathews, Test captain Dinesh Chandimal, Rangana Herath and Thisara Perera will participate in the competition alongside contracted domestic players and U-19 stars as well.

However, it won’t be featuring any international stars, which effectively means that the board has not gone ahead with its initial plans of conducting an IPL-style T20 competition amidst speculation.

Incidentally, though Galle will be represented, the Galle International Stadium won’t host a single game in the competition having come under controversy off late for several reasons such as heritage violations and pitch fixing allegations.
