World Jr Squash tourney gets Rs5m grant from TN govt

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has announced financial support to the tune of Rs 5 Million for the World Junior Squash Championship, which kicked off in the state capital Wednesday.

State chief minister K Palaniswami presented a Rs 5 million cheque to Tamil Nadu Squash Rackets Association president N Ramchandran on Monday after the association filed a plea with the government for more funding.

The tournament, which runs till July 29, features more than 170 participants from 28 countries, including hosts India, Egypt, Australia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Scotland.

Pertinently, “arch-enemy” and defending champions Pakistan are also represented at the event.

It is worth noting that it took the intervention of the World Squash Federation (WSF) to ensure that the Indian High Commission in Islamabad issued visas to the Pakistani contingent comprising 6 players and 3 officials after initially refusing.
