CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami on Thursday announced in a statement in the state assembly, a number of initiatives that would help upgrade sports infrastructure and talent in the state, Press Trust of India reports.
Palaniswami sees potential in badminton players from the state to bring laurels to India in international events. As a result, an academy will be set up at the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University campus in the city at an estimated budget of Rs 100 million.
Besides this, the government will determine 50 top sportspersons, including differently-abled persons from the state and under their scheme, will provide them training of world-class standards.
Annually, the government’s budget for purchasing equipment and sending players to foreign countries for their development and participating in competition, is reportedly Rs 50 million.
The state will also set up a District Sports Complex with state-of-the-art facilities like athletic track, gymnasium and swimming pool in the city of Vellore at a cost of Rs 173.5 million.
The time period for these projects to be completed was not mentioned.
