DUBAI: Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal’s appeal against the one-Test ban by match referee Javagal Srinath was rejected by the ICC-appointed judicial commissioner, Michael Beloff.
As a result, Chandimal’s four demerit points will also remain in his disciplinary record, which signifies that another offence would result in him being banned for either 4 Tests or 8 ODIs, whichever comes first.
Beloff, who is also the chairman of the ICC code of conduct commission, heard the appeal on Friday in a four-hour hearing in which both parties were represented by legal counsel.
“I express my gratitude to all who, though located in four different places, London, Colombo. Dubai and Barbados, collaborated in enabling me to reach a decision in time for the third test between the West Indies and Sri Lanka,” Beloff said abouut decision.
Meanwhile, Beloff also held a preliminary hearing to determine the charges to be levied on Sri Lanka coach Chandika Hathurusinghe and manager Asanka Gurusinhawho admitted that their conduct was contrary to the spirit of the game as per ICC laws, which is a Level 3 offence and carry an imposition of between four and eight suspension points.
Chandimal and the duo were responsible for the Sri Lankans refusing to take to the field in St Lucia at the start of the third day’s play, which caused a two-hour delay.
While ICC CEO David Richardson charged the trio, Beloff confirmed that the coach and manager could continue to carry out their duties in the Day-Night Test in Barbados. A final hearing that will take place on 10th July through a video/telephone conference, following which they are likely to be sanctioned.
