Tata Motors calls time on its truck racing c’ship

MUMBAI: Tata Motors has made it official that it is discontinuing its annual one-make truck racing event – the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship. 

The championship was last held in March 2017. 

The move will also help the company focus its resources on strengthening the performance of its commercial vehicle business, which is now on a revival path after witnessing a slump. In the 2018 fiscal, Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle sales grew 23.17% year-on-year to 3,76,456 units, Autocar India reported. Market shares, in turn, improved slightly to 43.95% percent from 42.80 percent in the previous year.

Confirming the decision, Girish Wagh, the automaker’s head of Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, told the auto publication that the event has served its key purpose of “providing dignity to truck drivers”. The auto major has now introduced various new initiatives to boost their motivation.

T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship was Tata Motors That was also on the calendar of Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI). 

Conducted at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC), Greater Noida under the aegis of FIA and FMSCI, the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship featured purpose-built Tata Prima race trucks, which underwent a host of performance upgrades across the four seasons for which it was held. 

The championship was first held in March 2014 and had drivers from the British Truck Racing Championship and the European Truck Racing Championship competing alongside Indian truck drivers trained by Tata Motors.
