NEW DELHI: The Narendra Modi-led Union cabinet on Wednesday approved an ordinance that permits the setting up of India’s first national sports University in Manipur, IANS reports.
The university is said to cost Rs 5.24 billion and the campus will be spread over 325 acres in the Imphal West district.
“The decision to set up the sports university through an ordinance was taken as a Bill on the matter is awaiting Parliament’s approval,” Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told IANS.
Prasad explained that it was the Prime Minister’s desire to promote sports in Manipur and the state’s performance in it that led to this ordinance.
