NEW DELHI: And then there were three! Senior advocate of the Supreme Court Vikas Singh will contest for the president’s post of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), which was held by Union finance minister Arun Jaitley from 1999 to 2013.
Singh, who is also the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), has said he would be filing his nomination papers for the June 30 DDCA polls Monday.
Singh will be challenging Rajat Sharma, chairman of news channel India TV, who has been fielded by one of the DDCA factions, as well as former India player Madan Lal, for the post.
The senior advocate told PTI that he would contest the DDCA election and that he had the support of a considerable number of members of the association, including some former Delhi cricketers.
Sharma, meanwhile, has the backing of former DDCA chief Sneh Bansal and its former treasurer Narinder Batra, who is also the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
As for the 67-year-old Lal, he has the backing of the group that is being supported by BCCI’s acting president CK Khanna and former cricketer Chetan Chauhan.
Founded in 1883, the DDCA got the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) affiliation in 1928. It is headquartered at the Feroz Shah Kotla in the national capital.
The first Indian president of the DDCA was Ram Prakash Mehra. He was also the longest-serving president of the association for 30 years (1952-1982).
Jaitley had also held the post for 14 years (1999-2013).
