Shashank Manohar set to continue as ICC chairman

MUMBAI: Shashank Manohar, the current International Cricket Council (ICC) independent chairman, is all set for a two-year extension of his tenure in the position.
According to a report by DNA, he has emerged to be the unanimous choice of all board members during the ongoing five-day quarterly ICC meeting in Kolkata.

Former England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief Giles Clarke was considered to be the only  challenger to Manohar for the top job.

However, current ECB Chairman Colin Graves is reportedly not too keen to give Clarke adequate backing for the same.

As per ICC rules, for a person to become eligible to contest for the post of independent chairman, one of its members has to propose, while one has to second a person’s name. The ICC’s ethics committee will then come into the picture to ascertain the interest of the candidate, apart from scrutinising his application.

So while Cricket Australia and Pakistan Cricket Board did agree with Clarke’s candidature, ECB’s own reluctance proved to be the deal breaker, according to DNA.
Manohar had mentioned earlier about being more than willing to continue, provided it was a “unanimous decision of the board”.

Even as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opposed Manohar for a reduction in their revenue share last year, it seems that they aren’t keen to see an outsider succeed him at present.

“Pakistan is with BCCI when it comes to keeping the Asian block intact in ICC,” a top official told DNA after the ICC meeting on Monday.
