MUMBAI: The proposed Super Cup by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is not finding many takers. After I-League clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal had questioned the format, timing and venue choice, coaches of ISL clubs are also expressing their unhappiness.
While the coach of North East United FC, Avram Grant had criticised the scheduling, the Kerala FC coach, James David, had talked about it positively.
But now, Steve Coppell, head coach of Jamshedpur FC, has termed the tournament as “pointless”, saying he is not a fan of the Super Cup, according to a report in goal.com.
“Originally I think Super Cup was supposed to be a tournament which was for an AFC (Asian Football Confederation) slot. It is going to take place at a time when the temperatures are going to be in the mid-30s in Kochi from what we have been told. I don’t know the format of the tournament and we are two weeks away! I don’t think it should be called a Super Cup!” Coppell is quoted as having said.
As per the new proposal, the top six teams of the I-League and the Indian Super League (ISL) get a direct entry into the round of 16, while the bottom-placed teams from both the leagues could still get one of the remaining four slots by participating in a play-off.
