NEW DELHI: The promoters of the recently held St Moritz Ice Cricket torunament have said that they are considering amking it an annual event with a three-match series.
Based on the “more than decent turnout” that they recieved for the event on a weekday this year, the promoters, Akhilesh Bahuguna and Vijay Singh, told newswire PTI that the good response from the top cricketers, and the willingness of sponsors to associate with the event was responsible for their optimisim about making it an annual event.
Singh said that a weekend game would have attracted more spectators, but St Moritz was not available because of Ice Horse Racing, the region’s most popular sport.
The players were mostly confident about batting on ice, but said that bowling and fielding were comparitively difficult. The South African all-rounder, Jacques Kallis, also pointed out the importnace of good footwear while fielding on ice.
If the tournament becomes an annual feature, it will, apart from spreading the game in uncharted territories, provide erstwhile stars and others in the cricket ecosystem one more lucrative opportunity and attract more players to the format.
