PGTI events to carry world ranking points from 2018

BENGALURU: Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) events are likely to carry world ranking points from 2018, bringing in more competition and more sponsorship from the government and corporates, PGTI CEO Uttam Singh Mundy says.

Mundy was speaking on the eve of the Bengaluru Open, one of the top events in terms of prize money, that teed off Wednesday at the Karnataka Golf Association course. It carries a purse of Rs 10 million.

The PGTI, formed in 2006, offers in excess of Rs 100 million in total prize money over 20-plus events. Till now, however, despite PGTI becoming a member of the Association of Professional Tours, its events do not carry ranking points — closing the door to top overseas players, New Indian Express reports.

The Bengaluru Open, sponsored by the Karnataka Tourism Department, hopes to become a permanent fixture on the PGTI calendar.
