MUMBAI: The third edition of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) will start in the first week of January 2018.
The Pro Sportify owned league will this time feature Olympic style Greco Roman Wrestling, an addition to the current form of Freestyle Wrestling.
“Greco Roman style of Wrestling was introduced in first Summer Olympics of 1896 and India has a rich past at the International level with first significant performance (Gold medal) at 1962, Jakarta Asian Games. Therefore, the inclusion of Olympic style Greco Roman format is a historic move that will offer International exposure to the wrestlers in addition to existing Freestyle Wrestling in the league. This will also take the level of Greco Roman category a notch above,” said Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, president, Wrestling Federation of India while announcing the new season of PWL.
In the last season that culminated in January, 36 matches were played among five teams resulting in 2461 points with a leading point score of 38 points (Bengaluru Vs Punjab) in a single bout. In last two seasons, a total of 30 Olympians amidst 11 Rio Olympic medalists, 16 medalists of World Champion and 7 Continental Games champions took part in the tournament.
The organisers say more than 200 international players have expressed intent to be a part of the league, apart from the extensive list of 300 players (Indian and International) that is currently being scrutinized by ProSportify and Wrestling Federation of India to carve out the best teams with top players.
