Sindhu to headline senior national badminton tourney from Feb 1

PATNA: Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu is expected to participate in the 72nd Inter-Zonal, Inter-State and 81st Senior National Badminton Championship to be held here at Patliputra Sports Complex Hall from February 1 to 7, organisers said on Tuesday.

Sindhu plays for Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB), which is participating in the championship.

Ruthika Shivani, Pranab Chopra, Srikanth, Siril, Chirag Sen and Sayali Ghokhle will be among the 500 players who will be seen in action in the seven-day championship.

The tournament is being conducted in Patna for the second time, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, organising president and state finance minister, told reporters.

Eight teams will take part in Inter-Zonal team championship on the first two days while the Senior National Championship will be played from February 3 to 7, PTI quotes Siddiqui, also vice-president of Badminton Association of India (BAI), as having said at the media briefing.

Rs1 million will be distributed among the winners of the tournament.

Siddiqui said he has written to chief minister Nitish Kumar to felicitate Sindhu along with Olympic Bronze medal winner Sakshi Mallik on behalf of the state government.
