India’s 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju outplayed China’s Ding Liren in the 14th round of the World Chess Championship 2024 title match in Singapore on Thursday to become the 18th world chess champion.
A magnificent Gukesh managed to seal the requisite 7.5 points against 6.5 of Liren after securing victory in the last classical time control game of the 14-game match that looked to be headed for a draw for most of the game.
“It’s the best day of my life,” an emotional Gukesh said after the historic win. The young chess player has been in the dream form of his career as earlier he guided India to a historic gold in the Chess Olympiad earlier this year.
Following his historic achievement as the youngest world chess champion, Gukesh’s marketability as a brand ambassador is expected to rise significantly.
Currently, he holds a single brand endorsement as the brand ambassador for RBL Bank. His latest victory could open doors to a variety of brand sponsorship opportunities, reflecting his growing influence beyond the chessboard.
On the back of this outstanding feat, Gukesh has surpassed the previous record held by Garry Kasparov as the youngest world chess champion.
