CA reports $7m deficit despite revenue surge

CRICKET AUSTRALIA (CA) has reported a net deficit of A$11.3 million ($7.34 million) for the 2024–25 financial year, as rising operational costs overshadowed a strong uplift in revenue fuelled by the Border–Gavaskar Trophy series against India.

At its annual general meeting, CA confirmed total revenue climbed by A$49.2 million year-on-year to A$453.7 million, primarily driven by a new domestic broadcast agreement and significant match income from hosting India across five Tests. However, expenses also rose by A$24.1 million, attributed to expanded marketing efforts for the India series and funding an additional 70 touring days for national teams.

Despite the increased revenue, distributions to CA’s member states and territories saw only a modest rise of A$800,000, totalling A$120.9 million. The limited uplift prompted criticism from Cricket Victoria (CV), whose chairman, Ross Hepburn, expressed frustration over the continued losses.

“For another year, CA is presenting a financial loss with a balance sheet showing member funds in deficit. It is especially disappointing that since FY2019, Cricket Australia’s accounts have shown significant cumulative loss, excluding COVID-related impacts and World Cup revenue,” Hepburn said at the AGM.

Looking ahead, CA CEO Todd Greenberg remains optimistic, highlighting the commercial impact of the upcoming Ashes series, set to begin in Perth on 21 November. CA expects commercial and sponsorship income to rise sharply from A$69 million to A$86 million in 2025–26.

CA CFO Sarah Pragnell said, “The Ashes and India white-ball content in FY26 is expected to deliver significant profit to CA and this will enable CA to rebuild its net assets and cash reserves for the next cycle.”

In a move aligned with cost-control efforts, ESPNCricinfo reported that CA will discontinue funding for Indoor Cricket national teams and domestic championships.

Meanwhile, CA continues to assess private investment opportunities in Big Bash League teams, aiming to unlock value and remain competitive against global leagues such as the IPL.
